Maria Kim, MD, MSc
Psychiatrist & Psychotherapist
Connecticut New York
I am a Yale trained psychiatrist and psychotherapist in private practice in CT and NY. I offer a warm and collaborative approach to mental health care. I aim to provide a safe space for authentic connection, where you feel seen and understood and can make meaningful change.
I focus on psychotherapy and integrative psychiatry including prescription medications.

My Approach
I find it deeply meaningful to work with those who are motivated and committed to addressing their concerns together. Concerns may include the impact of trauma, relationship difficulties, distressing symptoms such as depression, anxiety or fears, attentional difficulties, work-related stress and burnout, life transitions including loss and grief, questions around meaning and identity, or unwanted behaviors and emotional patterns. In addition, I also appreciate working with those who come see me primarily for personal growth. For those who are curious and introspective, I offer a safe space where we can explore change together.
Depending on your goals, preferences, and what seems most beneficial for your specific concerns, I may draw from a variety of psychological approaches, lifestyle-based strategies focused on sleep, nutrition, and physical well-being and/or, when appropriate, medication.

Services & Areas of Expertise
Initial Evaluation and Treatment Planning
We’ll begin with a couple of sessions to get to know each other — a chance for me to understand your experiences, what’s bringing you in, and what you’re hoping for as well as a chance for you to gauge if this is the right fit for you. After that, I’ll share my initial impressions and recommendations. We can then talk through your goals & preferences to develop a plan that feels right for you.
Psychotherapy
My therapeutic approach is primarily relational and psychodynamic. I believe that relationships are core to how we experience ourselves and the world. In a relational approach the therapeutic relationship itself becomes a safe space where one can reflect and work through patterns that may be limiting or painful. I view my role as one of a dynamic partner— offering reflections that come from engaging with you authentically in the moment to support deeper insight and change.
In addition, I may draw upon other approaches such as cognitive techniques (exploring how thoughts influence emotions and behavior), interpersonal therapy (examining relationship patterns and connections), problem-solving strategies (developing tools to navigate real-life challenges), trauma-informed therapies (like cognitive processing therapy), psychoanalytic approaches (exploration of how the unconscious mind governs conscious behaviors), somatic strategies (body-based methods to support emotional regulation, trauma processing, and mind-body connection), mindfulness based approaches, and coaching (focused on motivation, growth, and goal-setting).
Medications & Other Evidence Supported Treatments
If medication might be a helpful component, I can provide options — we’ll talk through the pros and cons together so you can make informed choices. I offer a flexible, individualized approach that focuses on finding medications that offer the most relief with the fewest side effects, while aligning with your preferences and the realities of your life. We can also explore other integrative options that may help reduce the amount of medication needed such as strategies focused on sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mind-body interventions.
*I do not accept insurance or work with insurance companies directly, but I can provide an itemized receipt or superbill that may allow you to get some reimbursement from your insurance company if you have out-of-network benefits. Sessions are in person at my office in New Haven CT. I also offer sessions via Telehealth
About
I completed my medical residency training at Yale University (Psychiatry) and Columbia University (Pediatrics). My background also includes training in a range of psychotherapeutic approaches, including psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive and mindfulness-based approaches, trauma-focused therapies as well as ketamine and psychedelic assisted psychotherapy (MAPS and USONA trained). In addition to clinical work, I’m a NIH-funded researcher and have led studies on burnout, depression, and the long-term impact of childhood trauma. I also work with the psychedelic-assisted therapy team at Yale University, supporting research and treatment for depression, trauma, and OCD as a therapist and facilitator.
